As of now, the highly mysterious patch notes for Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients has all been released, and players simply need to wait patiently for its official release on May 29th. However, if you’re a high-level player aiming for the leaderboards in each new league, you certainly won’t be waiting idly now.
Each league change means that some content in PoE 2 will be weakened or strengthened through balance adjustments, which will directly affect the strongest builds in each class, especially Ascendancy Classes. In the current patch 0.5.0, spellcaster classes are most affected.
If you happen to enjoy using powerful spells to kill enemies from a safe distance, then IGGM.com’s comprehensive list of spellcaster classes tier in PoE 2: Return of the Ancients here, compiled by analyzing all patch notes, is a must-read. Note that existing patch content may be changed after the new league officially launches, so please be aware of the changes.
Tier Rank

Chronomancer – Stormweaver – Oracle – Blood Mage
1st: Chronomancer
First, IGGM will introduce you to Chronomancer, which is undoubtedly the top choice among Ascendancy Classes for spellcasters because it has high defensive capabilities and will not lose a lot of health or die directly from the slightest threat from monsters in the endgame.
Although patch 0.5.0 weakened defensive measures such as energy recharge, its own Ascendancy passive node can effectively make up for this deficiency, such as the damage reduction contained in Phased Form Skill; and the ability to revert health, spells and shields provided by Temporal Rift.
Of course, if you’re really afraid of getting killed in those monster-infested maps, you can try unlocking Unbound Encore node and getting Time Snap skill it provides. This will reset your cooldowns, and you can combine it with skills like Convalescence and Second Wind to achieve instant energy shield recovery and continuous recharging.
If you think Chronomancer only won first place in the caster classes set by IGGM.com because of its strong defensive capabilities, then you are being too one-sided. Its Quicksand Hourglass passive node, combined with The Sands of Time Unique Tyrant’s Sekhem, can provide extremely high casting speed and damage bonuses, making it no longer a problem to quickly run the map.
Meanwhile, Inevitability node provides Inevitable Agony skill, which provides delayed damage based on the curse effects you inflict on the monster. It allows you to easily distance yourself from the monster and watch its health steadily decline until it dies amidst painful groans.
Therefore, with its superior defensive capabilities and sustained high-intensity damage output, Chronomancer is undoubtedly one of the top spellcaster classes in PoE 2 0.5.0. Simply put, as long as you master effective skill rotation, navigating medium to high difficulty maps is a breeze.
However, it must be noted that the gear required to craft its regular build is relatively rarer, and the affixes it contains need to be maximized, making the investment quite large in the early stages of the league. To deal with this situation, you can visit IGGM.com to buy cheap POE 2 Currency. We promise secure shipping and delivery within 15 minutes, ensuring your league journey is not disrupted.

2nd: Stormweaver
Next, I’ll introduce Stormweaver, which requires relatively less investment in the early stages of POE 2 Return of the Ancients league, but is still very useful. Although the damage intensity of its skills and associated gear has been slightly reduced, its most advantageous Elemental Infusions have not been significantly diminished.
So overall, you don’t need to make major modifications to Stormweaver builds you used before. Only your defensive effectiveness needs to be strengthened after some energy shield recharge reductions. IGGM recommends that offensive skills or gear can be continued from the one used in the last league.
Among these, the skill types most worth considering and investing in are ice-based skills like Ice Nova + Snap or Frostbolt, which can instantly freeze enemies, which of all can effectively interrupt monsters before they pose a threat and allow you to unleash the remaining damage, perfectly aligning with the developers’ goal of increasing game speed in patch 0.5.0.
Once you’ve established a smooth damage skill rotation, you can invest in critical strike chance buffs in some build options, such as Comet skill, which grants higher frost damage and a more robust defensive system; or Call of the Brotherhood Topaz Ring, which converts all your lightning damage into frost damage, thereby increasing your overall damage output.
3rd: Oracle
Next up is Oracle, which hasn’t seen any major changes in POE 2 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients. Furthermore, its build strategy, which utilizes Entangles for pure physical damage, hasn’t been significantly weakened in this league, so it remains a viable option as your first choice.
However, it’s still important to remind you that this build requires a significant investment, especially Cast on Crit Oracle, which requires a much higher critical strike chance bonus than other Ascendancy Classes focused on spell-casting. So, if you have a limited budget, you might want to put it aside for now.
4th: Blood Mage
The last one is Blood Mage, which was significantly nerfed in patch 0.5.0: Leech-centric life-steal builds became obsolete; and the drawback of the extremely high damage output from casting Comet at the cost of massive health remained unchanged. Both of these factors make Blood Mage Ascendancy Class increasingly vulnerable in the new league.
At the same time, the gear that this class relies on has also been weakened to varying degrees: The Covenant Altar Robe, which can convert the health loss caused by casting spells into mana consumption, has had its conversion efficiency reduced; and Atziri’s Acuity Moulded Mitts, which can powerfully drain health, has also been reworked, leaving Blood Mage in a helpless situation.
The above is the current tier order of all Ascendancy Classes for spellcasters in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients, based on the existing patch notes. You can choose the appropriate option based on your desired league progression requirements, but IGGM.com does not recommend trying Blood Mage, as it is terrible both in the early and endgame.
